Barnet YHA Group e-mail ListWe have set up a mailing list on Yahoo! Groups to enable members with e-mail access to communicate with each other in a fast and efficient way without having to know everyone's individual e-mail addresses. Some questions and answers to help explain.
How does it work? How do I join? How do I unsubscribe? What is it for? Do I need to sign up for a Yahoo ID? Is it connected with the Barnet YHA Web Site? Can I e-mail

The Basics
Q. How does it work? A. Anyone who has joined (subscribed) to the list can send an e-mail to

and everyone else on the list will receive the e-mail. Thus you don't have to know everyone's addresses, only

Q. How do I join? A. Send an e-mail to

You don't need to put anything in the 'subject' field or in the message itself and if you do, it will not be seen by anyone. You will probably get an automatic confirmation e-mail asking you to click on a link or reply to the e-mail to verify your e-mail address. You need to verify your e-mail address before your application to join will be sent to the moderator. When the moderator has approved your application, you will be signed up and you will receive a 'welcome' e-mail. You then remain a member of the Yahoo group until you unsubscribe. Note that subscribing and unsubscribing use special e-mail addresses which can't be used to send messages to the group. The e-mail address for messages to the group is

Q. OK then, how do I unsubscribe? A. Send an e-mail to

Q. Yes, but what is it for? A. Anything anyone wants to communicate to the rest of the group. Some examples follow. A member is organising a new weekend and wants to advertise it so she sends one mail to

and everyone gets it. The social sec. quickly needs someone to step in and run next Tuesday's gathering so he sends a mail to ask for help. The outdoor organiser has a new programme out so he sends an e-mail to

to announce the fact and either lists the programme in the mail or gives a link to the website. A member wants to canvas the opinion of other members about a topic, what are the best boots to buy for people with wide feet; whoops I have lost the number for the hostel manager in Grasmere does anyone have it? The webmaster puts up a new version of the newsletter on the site so uses

to tell everyone.

Q. Do I need to sign up for a Yahoo ID? A. Not necessarily. The simplest way to use

is as an electronic mailing list. For this you only need access to e-mail but World Wide Web access is not necessary. If you don't have a Yahoo ID then you only have e-mail membership of the Yahoo group.

Q. Is it connected with the Barnet YHA Web Site? A. No, they are completely separate although each one has a link to the other.

Q. Can I e-mail

to get information about the Group? A. Not unless you are subscribed to the list, in which case you probably have the information already. If you are not a member of the Yahoo group, you can send an e-mail to the following address (which currently goes to Jane L.) Top
Further information
Q. What are the advantages of setting up my own Yahoo ID? A. If you have World Wide Web access and you set up your own Yahoo ID, then when you join the Yahoo barnetyha group with that Yahoo ID, you have web membership of the Yahoo group. This allows you to access a shared 'files' area where you can put documents in Word, Acrobat or text format.
You can also access a list of members and you can see the recent and older messages that have been sent. You also get an alternative way of sending a message to the group from the Web instead of using e-mail, by going to groups.yahoo.com/group/barnetyha and logging in. This could be useful if you are somewhere away from home and can get web access but not e-mail access ("Hi, all, I'm in a cyber café in Timbuktu...").
Top
Q. OK, so how do I sign up for my own Yahoo! ID? A. Go to groups.yahoo.com and click on the link "sign up now". If you do this, you may get the impression that you also need to sign up for a Yahoo e-mail address but this is not necessary. You can use your existing e-mail address.
Top
Q. Can I customise my Yahoo! membership? A. If you have your own Yahoo! ID then you can customise the way you receive e-mail: which format, do you want every e-mail, a daily summary or none (read it on the web page)? You can also specify whether and in what form your name appears on the e-mails you send to the group.
Top
Q. When I reply to an e-mail from the group does it only go to the person who sent it? A. Yes. The Yahoo group is currently set up so that if you simply hit 'Reply', the reply will only go to the person who sent it, not the whole group. If you are sure that your reply is likely to be of interest to the whole group, then you can reply to the whole group by changing the 'To' address of your e-mail to

Q. Can I see who sent each e-mail? A. Yes. The sender's full e-mail address will be on the e-mail, and depending on how they are listed in the group their name may appear too.
Top
Q. Who can see my e-mail address? A. Other members can't see your full e-mail address until you send an e-mail to the group. When you do this, everyone who has subscribed to
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
can see your full e-mail address. Members who have a Yahoo ID can also see a list of members by logging onto Yahoo, going to the barnetyha group then selecting 'Members'. These e-mail addresses are deliberately incomplete, apart from your own e-mail address which only you and the Group Moderators will see in full on the list.
Top
Q. Can I find another member's e-mail address? A. If the person you want to contact has sent an e-mail to the group, you can find their full e-mail address in the 'From' field of their e-mail. If they haven't sent an e-mail and you have your own Yahoo ID, then log in to Yahoo, go to the barnetyha group and select 'Members'. Although you can't see a member's full e-mail address, you can send an e-mail to a member by clicking on that member's e-mail address.
Top
Q. I joined the e-mail list using my Hotmail address and I am not receiving any messages A. Hotmail may be putting the messages that were sent to

into a 'Junk mail' folder because they are not addressed to you personally. If you don't check the 'Junk mail' folder, they are automatically deleted after 5 days. Check your Hotmail 'Junk mail' folder and if you find a message that was sent to

then there should be a setting that you can change to say that this is not junk.
Top
Q. Who can join the barnetyha Yahoo! group? A. Current Barnet YHA members can join. Applications are approved by the moderators (currently Rob Worth and Dave and Jane L.). If we didn't do this, anyone in the world could find it, join immediately, receive the e-mails, turn up at events and read the newsletters with members' phone numbers.
Top
Q. Can I put photos from a digital camera onto the barnetyha Yahoo group? A. The Yahoo group has photo albums but we are not currently using it as there is a limitation that prevents photos being viewed full size by other members. We have therefore set up our own photo albums on this barnetyha.org web site click here for details.

Q. Is there help available? A. If you have a question about

in particular then Rob Worth will be able to help or you can e-mail

and they will do their best to answer your question. Or you could always get help on Yahoo! groups in general from http://help.yahoo.com/help/groups/
If you want to know about more basic stuff like PCs, e-mail set-up or digital photos, then collar Dave L. whenever you get the opportunity.
The more people sign up and use the group the more useful it will be for everyone. Have fun and stay in touch!
