There are a few public photo albums that anyone can see without logging in and there are also some members' albums but you need to log in to see these and to upload your own photos. If you need help with getting a login or logging in, please see the other Help topics.

Creating your own album 

Befofe you can upload any photos, you need to have your own album. If you don't already have an album, you will see a message like this on the Gallery page after you have logged in:

• You don't have your own album, create one by clicking here.
  (Click the link if you are ready to create an album and upload photos)
  

• Remind me again in:
  (To avoid seeing this message again, select 2 hours, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year then click Submit - you may still see the reminder again however, this is a known problem at the moment )
  

If you are ready to upload some photos, go ahead and create your own album. Please do not create your own album until you are ready to upload some photos, otherwise your empty album will appear  in the list of albums in the photo gallery.

Uploading photos

Before you upload your photos, you should resize them so that the larger dimension (width or height) is less than about 800 pixels and so that the file size is less than 200 kBytes. The preferred image size is 720 x 540 pixels. We have set it up so that if you upload photos or the files are larger than this size, they will be resized automatically to 720 x 540. If you don't know how to resize your own photos, you can let the web site resize them for you but this can be rather inefficient because it takes longer to upload larger files, which could be 10 - 20 imes larger than necessary and the large file may exceed your storage quota while it is being resized.

You will not be able to upload photos if your web browser (such as Internet Explorer) has a 'pop-up' blocker installed. 'Pop-ups' are new windows that open automatically on a web page. These can be a nuisance if lots of adverts pop up so various 'pop-up' blockers are available. If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, it has a 'pop-up' blocker in Internet Explorer. Gallery needs to 'pop-up' new windows when you upload photos, so you must disable your 'pop-up' blocker if you have one. In Windows XP, when a pop-up is blocked, you will see a message bar at the top of the web page. Clcik on this bar for more options and allow pop-ups for this site (www.barnetyha.org). We won't put any advertising pop-ups on this web site! Then go back and try to upload your photos again. For further details please click another Help item,  Web site (general) - pop-up blockers .

Each member has a quota of 3 Megabytes for storing photos (6 MB for couples with joint albums). 3 MB will typically allow you to upload at least 60 photos and you can ask to have your quota increased to 6 MB or 12MB for a joint album.

To create sub-albums

If you only have a few photos, you can simply put them into your album. If you have more than about 9 or if they relate to more than one group event, you can organise them better if you create two or more sub-albums (see below). You need to fill in a name for the sub-album.

Name: This name is used for storing your album but it is not seen by members. It needs to follow certain rules. It mustn't have any spaces and it can only have letters a-z, digits 0-9 and underscore _ and dash - characters.  

You should also fill in a title for the album.

Title: A short title, e.g. Christmas Party 2006

You can also fill in the summary, keywords and description. These are optional but it is helpful to other members if you include the summary and description, like this:

Summary: This is a summary of what's in the album, e.g. Christmas party weekend December 20056at Salisbury Y.H.

Description: This is a more detailed description of what's in the album, e.g. Group Christmas party weekend staying at Salisbury Y.H. 8th - 10th December 2006, with photos of the party and walks on Saturday and Sunday.

You can also fill in some Keywords. These words are not seen by other members but they are used if someone does a search of the photo albums. If you want to do this, they could be something like this:

Keywords: Christmas, party, Salisbury

Details on uploading photos 

• Click on 'Photo Albums' or 'Members photos'
• Click on the picture for your album
• For your sub-album Click on the down arrow by 'album actions', select 'edit album' and press enter
• On the left side under 'Options' click 'Add Items'
• Make sure you have the 'From Web Browser' tag selected
• For each file click on the 'browse' button and select picture file (resize first) - and fill in the Caption. I would advise uploading a few files at a time.
• Before clicking on the 'Add Items' button at the bottom of the page

• select 'captions' for 'Set item titles from Description'
• untick the boxes for 'Assign caption to 'Summary' and 'Description''
• make sure the box for 'create thumbnails now' has a tick
