Day walk Dunstable Downs & Whipsnade Tree Cathedral - 9 miles

A 9 mile (14.5 km) circular walk starting & finishing at Studham, Bedfordshire. The walk will cross Studham green and pick up the Icknield Way and on to the the Chiltern Way across fields and along the perimeter fence of Whipsnade Zoo and on to Whipsnade church. The route proceeds to Whipsnade Down and across Dunstable Downs to the Five Knolls burial mounds, which are of Neolithic origin, with skeletons from the fifth century AD. We will have lunch on the Downs, and on the way back, we will have a break at the outdoor Whipsnade Tree Cathedral (free entry) planted by Mr E. K. Blyth in memory of friends lost in WW1. The end of the walk takes us a different route back to the Red Lion pub, via Studham’s 13th century church.
